The Rules of Washertoss
For those of you unfamiliar with the great game of washertoss, here are the basic rules:
- Two or four people (tossers) can play at a time.
- Two washertoss boards are placed approximately ten (10) feet apart (Figure A.1).
Figure A.1: A standard washertoss board.
- Each washertoss board has three holes on it, each approximately four (4) inches in diameter (Figure A.2).
Figure A.2: Two boards set ten feet apart.
- Tossers must be standing on one washertoss board while throwing a total of three (3) washers at the other board (Figure A.3).

Figure A.3: A player tosses while a spectator observes.
- Opponents alternate throwing washers (player 1 throws a washer, then player 2 throws a washer, then player 1 throws their second washer, etc.). Two opponents throwing a total of six (6) washers is called a "chucker".
- In doubles games, teammates line up on opposite washer boards and throw in one direction only and against the same opponent each chucker.
- The person or team who made the fewest points (or lost the most points) in the previous chucker will go last in the current chucker.
- If no player or team made or lost any points in the previous chucker, the same tossing order will be used.
- Basic scoring is as follows:
- Each washer that goes into the nearest hole is worth one (1) point.
- Each washer that goes into the middle hole is worth three (3) points.
- Each washer that goes into the farthest hole is worth five (5) points.
- The game is played until one player or team has twenty-one (21) points at the end of a chucker.
- Advanced scoring is as follows:
- If opponents' washers go into the same hole in the same chucker, they cancel each other out.
- Points which push a player or team over twenty-one (21) points will be deducted from the team's score. For example, if Team A has 18 points and gets a five (5) point washer, their score is now 13 points. Another five (5) point washer will move them back up to 18 points.
- If both teams are tied at 21 at the end of the chucker, the game goes into overtime.
- The game winner in overtime will be the player or team that scores the most points in a chucker.
- Overtime will continue until one person or team scores the most points in a chucker.
